Christos Zacharakis

Christos G. Zacharakis (born July 28, 1939 in Athens ) is a former Greek diplomat and politician .

Biographical data

He studied law at the University of Athens . In 1964 he joined the foreign service. He has been employed in New York City , Copenhagen , Istanbul and Alexandria .

From 1979 to 1985 he was the Greek ambassador to Nicosia ( Cyprus ). From 1986 to October 24, 1989 he was Permanent Representative of the Greek Government to the North Atlantic Pact in Brussels.

On September 21, 1989, he was appointed Ambassador to Washington, DC , where he was accredited from October 24, 1989 to September 3, 1993.

From 1994 to 1999 he was Permanent Representative of Greece next to the UN headquarters in New York City .

Subsequently he was Secretary General of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On July 20, 1999 and July 19, 2004 he was elected to the European Parliament as a candidate for the New Democracy , where he belonged to the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) .
