Chromium (III) iodide is a chemical compound from the group of iodides .

Extraction and presentation

Chromium (III) iodide can be obtained by reacting chromium with iodine .

properties

Chromium (III) iodide is a dark green solid that is quite resistant to air and moisture. It has a trigonal crystal system with the space group P 3 1 21 (space group no. 152) . At a temperature above 500 ° C the compound decomposes, producing chromium (II) iodide and iodine . With hexaquachrome (III) iodide [Cr (H 2 O) 6 ] I 3 · 3H 2 O there is also a hydrate of the compound, which forms dark-violet hygroscopic crystals. Template: room group / 152

use

Chromium (III) iodide can be used to produce high-purity chromium.
