etymology

The freestanding mountain peak, which breaks off steeply to the north and west, deserves the name «Horn» . Because the summit is slightly overhanging to the west and forms a geological fold , the addition "Chrumm" ( Alemannic for crooked ) was added. This can be seen particularly well when looking from the north, the Hergiswilerseite .

geology

The Chrummhorn is built from a steep piece of Unterer Schrattenkalk , which weathered from the eastern limb of a fold inclined to the west. That is why the summit also slopes to the west and is slightly overhanging in this direction - this is where the older, more easily eroded Drusberg strata follow .
