Life
Childhood and youth
Born in Arkansas, Chuck Mayfield's family moved to Eloy , Arizona around 1947 . As a child he was interested in music and sang. In 1951 he began playing with Ray Odom and the Sunset Riders in the area.
Career
Mayfield began to earn his living professionally with music. In 1952 he signed a recording deal with Starday Records and his first single was released there with Washing on the Line / Face In the Clouds . Its popularity quickly rose, and Mayfield was invited to guest appearances at the Louisiana Hayride , Saturday Night Shindig, and the Houston Hometown Jamboree .
Mayfield was at the height of his career in the mid-1950s. Despite the lack of hits, he was very well known in Arizona. Ray Odom had started the Arizona Hayride in Phoenix in 1955 , in which Mayfield now regularly performed on the weekend. He had his own radio show on KCKY and gave a successful concert in 1956 at Madison Square Garden in New York City . In the meantime Mayfield had switched to Abbott Records from California , but they sold his contract to Dot Records . Dot only released a single Mayfield single.
In 1959, the Louisiana Hayride became aware of Mayfield and hired him as a member. During this time he appeared with many stars of the time such as Jim Reeves , Johnny Cash , Johnny Horton and Red Sovine . Mayfield remained associated with the show until the end of the Hayride in the 1960s. Despite appearances on nationally broadcast shows, Mayfield never made it into the charts. Mayfield still performs occasionally today.
