Church of St Mary the Virgin
The Church of St Mary the Virgin (also University Church ) is the university church in Oxford .
history
The steeple-spire church was built in 1315 on the site of St Mary's Church. The tower of the old Marienkirche was incorporated into the new building.
Even today, a recess in a column in the north aisle of the church reminds of the place where Archbishop Cranmer received his death sentence in 1556.
In June 1581, 400 copies of the pamphlet Decem Rationes (Defense of the Catholic Faith), which the Jesuit Edmund Campion had written underground, were secretly displayed before the beginning of the service in St. Mary's.
In 1637 the richly decorated vestibule was built. 127 steps lead to the viewing platform, which offers a view of the city.
During the 1740s, John Wesley preached frequently at St. Mary's. 1828–1842 John Henry Newman served as a university minister pastor at St Mary's.
During the Second World War, a Lutheran congregation of German refugees was founded here. To this day, a service is held in German on the first Sunday of every month.
organ
The organ was built in 1986 by the Swiss organ builder Metzler . The design of the instrument is based on the historic organ, which was built in 1676 by the organ builder Bernard Smith and which was destroyed in the Second World War. The instrument has 29 registers on three manuals and a pedal .
