Cinna Lomnitz

Cinna Lomnitz Aronsfrau (born May 4, 1925 in Cologne , † July 7, 2016 in Mexico City ) was a Chilean - Mexican geophysicist . He is known for his achievements in the field of rock mechanics and seismology .

Life

Lomnitz was born into a Jewish family in Germany. He graduated from the Universidad de Chile in 1948 , then studied with Karl von Terzaghi at Harvard University , where he graduated in soil mechanics . Lomnitz received his doctorate in 1955. He was a researcher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico , the University of California, Berkeley and the Universidad de Chile, where he was the founder of the geophysical institute.

In 1990 he became editor of the magazine Geofísica Internacional . He was a member of the Mexican and Chilean Academy of Sciences .

Lomnitz died in 2016 at the age of 91.

His son Claudio Lomnitz is an anthropologist at Columbia University .
