features

Cirsium creticum is a two-year-old hemicryptophyte that reaches heights of 50 to 100 centimeters. The stems, which are leafy to the tip, have thorny wings and are richly branched above the middle. The upper side of the leaf is hairy to shaggy and not prickly. The underside of the leaf is woven-woolly to felt-like and sloping down long. The bracts are erect and have no ligaments. The middle bracts are egg-shaped and abruptly narrow into a 0.5 to 8 millimeter long terminal spine. The inner bracts have a triangular, short, purple appendage. The crown is purple.

The flowering period extends from July to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.

Occurrence

Cirsium creticum occurs in the eastern Mediterranean . The species grows in alluvial forests, swamps, springs and on river gravel. In Crete it can be found at altitudes from 0 to 1200 meters.

Systematics

There are 4 subspecies of Cirsium creticum :

  • Cirsium creticum (Lam.) D'Urv. subsp. creticum : It occurs in Italy, Sicily, the Balkan Peninsula, Romania, Crete, the Aegean Sea and Turkey. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.
  • Cirsium creticum subsp. gaillardotii (Boiss.) PH Davis & Parris : It occurs in Israel, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Turkey.
  • Cirsium creticum subsp. triumfettii (Lacaita) K. Werner : It occurs in Italy, Sicily and in the former Yugoslavia. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.
  • Cirsium creticum subsp. dictaeum Greuter, Matthäs & Risse : The subspecies is endemic on Crete in the Dikti Mountains , where it grows in swampy places at altitudes of around 1000 meters. The underside of the leaf is almost bare and the leaves are deeply incised. The leaf blade consists only of the narrow wings along the spindle and base of the approximately 30 millimeter long thorns.
