Ciudad de Murcia was a Spanish football club from the city of Murcia . The club, founded in 1999, relocated to Granada in the summer of 2007 , as Granada CF 74 took the place of the Segunda División club.

history

In the summer of 1999, Ciudad de Murcia was founded by Quique Pina , a former player in the city's largest club, Real Murcia . Thanks to influential friends and good business partners, the club quickly managed to get into professional football. Already in 2000/01 they were promoted to Segunda División B , which is the 3rd Spanish league. Only two years later, in the 2003/04 season, Ciudad de Murcia made it to the Segunda División for the first time .

Ciudad finished the first two seasons in 18th place and was only just able to avoid relegation to the third division. But already in the third year they finished fourth. Only on the last day of the match did the Murcians have to admit defeat to the later promoted UD Levante in a remote duel . The 2006/07 season they ended also in fourth place in the table, but with a clear gap to city rivals Real Murcia, who rose instead.

In June 2007 it was announced that an investor from Granada had taken over the association. He finally moved it to Granada under the name of FC Granada 74 . This case is comparable to that of the English club Wimbledon FC , which is now called Milton Keynes Dons . All players who were under contract with Ciudad were given the opportunity to join the new club or change clubs for free.

In contrast to the first team, the B-Team broke away from the new investor and was the first team in the Tercera División to be re-established as CA Ciudad de Lorqui . This club rose in 2008 to the Segunda División B and was renamed FC Atlético Ciudad . Since the relegation of FC Granada 74 to the Tercera División at the end of the 2008/09 season, the former second team has played a league higher than the investor team.

Stadion

Ciudad de Murcia played in the La Condomina stadium , which has a capacity of 16,800 spectators. The stadium was inaugurated on December 25, 1924. As the largest club in the city, Real Murcia, moved into a new stadium, the Estadio Nueva Condomina , and Ciudad can no longer use it, it was decided to demolish the stadium and replace it with a sports center.
