Claas Dieter Knoop

Claas Dieter Knoop (born March 18, 1945 in Bremen ) is a retired German diplomat and was ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ethiopia and Djibouti from 2006 to 2010 as well as Germany's permanent representative to the African Union with observer status.

Life

After studying law, he received his doctorate in 1974 at the University of Goettingen to the Dr. iur. and was from 1975 to 1976 research assistant at the University of Göttingen. After joining the Foreign Service in 1976, first assignments followed at the embassy in New Zealand , the permanent representation to the EC in Brussels and at the Foreign Office in Bonn.

From 1988 to 1991 he was head of the economic department at the embassy in South Africa and then until 1995 deputy head of a department at the Foreign Office. After two years as permanent representative of the ambassador to Thailand , he became head of division in the Foreign Office in 1997.

In 2001, 19 years after his first assignment, he returned to the Permanent Mission to the EU in Brussels, where he was Deputy Head of the Political Department until 2006. After his retirement (2010), Knoop took over from November 2012 to June 2014 on behalf of the Foreign Office and of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development / BMZ representing the German co-chair for the partnership "Democratic Governance, Human Rights and Culture" within the framework of the Europe-Africa strategic partnership. As a partner in the consulting company "DiploConsult", he carried out a training project for the government of Mauritius in Mauritius at the end of 2015. In March 2016, Knoop took on a training project in the area of ​​press and media freedom in Nairobi / Kenya on behalf of the "Senior Expert Service / SES" in cooperation with Deutsche Welle. Since 2010 Knoop has taken on teaching assignments at the (private) Jacobs University and the University of Bremen on African and European policy issues as well as numerous lectures and seminars, including a. at the FU Berlin and the New York University Berlin in this range of topics. In September 2016, Knoop was appointed "Adjunct Professor for International Relations" by Jacobs University in Bremen. As a longstanding member of the EU Commission's team of speakers ("Team Europe"), he actively participates in European public relations.
