Claire Dodd
Dorothy Arlene "Claire" Dodd (born December 29, 1911 in Des Moines , Iowa , † November 23, 1973 in Beverly Hills , California ) was an American actress and dancer .
Life
Claire Dodd was born in Des Moines in 1911 (1908, according to other sources), the only child of farmer Walter Willard Dodd and his wife Ethel Viola, and grew up in Baxter for the first six years before moving her family to their hometown. It was there that she completed her school career. After her parents separated, Dodd moved to Los Angeles and made her living as a model . In addition, she took part in auditions for her first small film roles, which she received from 1930.
During a casting that same year, Dodd was hired by Samuel Goldwyn for his dance group Goldwyn Girls and appeared with them in the music film Whoopee! on. The producer of the film was Florenz Ziegfeld junior , who recorded Dodd as a dancer with the Ziegfeld Follies in New York . After she signed a contract with Paramount Pictures , she returned to Los Angeles.
Claire Dodd was nicknamed Mystery Girl in Hollywood because she shielded her private life as much as possible. Her date of birth has also remained unverified, which is why there are different information to this day, with 1911 being the most common. She was married twice: from 1931 until her divorce in 1938 with investment banker John Milton Strauss. Their son was born in 1936. The couple had kept their marriage a secret until the child was born. In 1942 Dodd married H. Brand Cooper, with whom she had four more children. The marriage lasted until Dodd's death.
After marrying H. Brand Cooper, Claire Dodd ended her film career and withdrew into private life. She died of cancer on November 23, 1973 at her Beverly Hills home at the age of 61. She was buried on the grounds of the Brand Library & Art Center in Glendale .
