Clandestino ("esperando la ultima ola ...") is Manu Chao's first solo album, released in 1998 .

Meaning of the title

"Clandestino", the title of the album, literally means "secretly". A clandestino is an undocumented person , an unrecognized traveler or an illegal immigrant . The eponymous opening song of the record "Clandestino" is about such a migrant, who has left his previous life behind on the journey between Ceuta and Gibraltar . The title addition "Esperando la ultima ola ..." literally means "waiting for the last wave ..." and is also the title addition of the piece Por el Suelo .

The album contains 16 songs sung mainly in Spanish, but also in French, English and Portuguese. The texts are often to be understood symbolically, but also have a thoughtful background. Among other things, they deal with the misery in the favelas in Brazil, in the slums of Bogotá and those in Dakar . In addition to several songs sung in narrative form, the album also contains songs that are composed of the same or very similar sentences repeated several times. Parts of the album were recorded on a four-track recorder during his travels around the world.

Publications and chart successes

The album had more than 2.5 million sales worldwide in connection with the success of the single Bongo Bong , which means that Manu Chao sold more units with one album than his previous band Mano Negra during their entire career. It is one of the world's best-selling French music productions. Especially in Central and South America, Clandestino was a great success.

At the Victoires de la Musique awards ceremony in February 1999, the album was named Best Album of the Year in the World Music / Traditional Music category. The album also achieved platinum status in Spain and was awarded gold in Germany.

Outcoupled singles were Bongo Bong and the title track Clandestino .

Bongo bong

Bongo Bong is a more electronic cover version of the Mano Negra song King Of Bongo . The song reached number 7 in the German single charts as well as number 4 in the Austrian, number 15 in the Swiss, number 40 in the French and number 45 in the Swedish charts. This single marked the chaos breakthrough in Europe and North America.

An instrumental version of Bongo Bong was the basis for the songs Mr. Bobby and Homens on Chaos album Próxima Estación: Esperanza . It was later covered by Robbie Williams (Rudebox), among others . The singing in Je ne t'aime plus comes from Anouk Khelifa-Pascal.

Quotes
