Game of the Year 2003: Nomination list for the |
Clans - the first villages , often called Clans for short , is a board game designed by Leo Colovini for two to four players, ages ten and up. A game lasts between 30 and 45 minutes. Clans was published by Winning Moves at the end of 2002 , was nominated for the Game of the Year Critics' Prize in 2003 and reached 3rd place in the German Games Prize .
Theme of the game and equipment
Members of five clans wander through a pristine landscape and live through five epochs of the establishment of villages . As a rule, they settle peacefully with members of other clans, but not always.
The six-part game board, which is typical for Winning Moves, is clearly divided into 60 areas of 4 colonizable landscape types ( grassland , steppe , forest , mountains ) plus lakes. On the left, a scoring bar runs around a column called the epoch overview.
The playing figures are small wooden huts, painted in the colors of the five clans. There are also counting discs made of wood and bonus markers made of cardboard.
Game flow
There is only one type of move: all huts in an area are always moved to a non-empty, neighboring area. If this creates a populated area that is only surrounded by empty fields, a village was founded; the represented clans receive rating points and the player in turn can also receive a bonus marker if the landscape type of the new village matches that of the current era.
The competition becomes interesting because it is kept secret which player plays with which color. It is the turn of the players to move and each player can move huts of all colors. So you have to found the villages in such a way that your own clan color does not go out empty-handed, but you must not be too obvious.
The game ends when twelve villages have been founded. The players reveal which clan they played for and add their bonus markers to the rating points of their clan.
Target group and assessment
The simple principle of the game with only one type of play makes it easier for less experienced players or for rounds with changing participants to get started. With two players, the strategic element predominates in clans, with four players the intuitive part increases.
