Clare Gray

Clare P. Gray (born March 17, 1965 ) is an English chemist .

Gray received her bachelor's degree in chemistry from Oxford University in 1987 and received her PhD there in 1991 with Anthony Cheetham . As a post-doctoral student at Radboud University Nijmegen , she was a visiting researcher at DuPont Central Research and Development in 1992/93 . In 1994 she became an Assistant Professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook , where she received a full professorship in 2001. In 2009 she became Professor in Cambridge (Geoffrey Moorhouse Gibson Professor) and also Director of the North Eastern Center for Chemical Energy Storage at Stony Brook University (currently (2016) Associate Director).

In 2000 she was visiting professor at the University of Strasbourg.

It deals with the investigation of lithium-ion batteries with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), which also enables in situ investigation of structural changes during charging and discharging.

In 2015, she announced the development of lithium-ion batteries in Science, which is a step towards batteries that use ordinary air for the chemical reaction. These would have an energy density per unit weight that is ten times higher than that of conventional lithium-ion batteries and represent a significant advance for use in electric cars. Although they still operated with an oxygen atmosphere, they already tolerated a certain amount of water vapor. In terms of efficiency, they are comparable to conventional lithium-ion batteries, have a graphene electrode and release lithium hydroxide instead of lithium peroxide at the cathode when discharged.

In 1994 she received a Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation, in 1997 the DuPont Young Investigator Award, and from 1998 to 2000 she was a Sloan Research Fellow . In 2020 she received the Hughes Medal , 2014 the Davy Medal , 2011 the Royal Society Kavli Medal, 2010 the John Jeyes Award of the Royal Society of Chemistry and 2013 the Günther Laukien Prize. She has been a Fellow of the Royal Society since 2011 . In 2005 she received the Arfvedson-Schlenk Prize for lithium chemistry. In 2017 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Academia Europaea . She holds honorary doctorates from Lancaster University and Orléans University .
