Clarence ( Māori : Waiautoa "Fast Water") is a small settlement in the Kairoura District on the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The settlement was probably named after the Duke of Clarence , later Wilhelm IV .

geography

The settlement is located around 34 km northeast of Kaikoura at the confluence of the Clarence River in the Pacific Ocean .

history

Members of the Waitaha people settled in the area as early as the 12th century ; they were displaced in the 16th century by the Kāti Māmoe coming from the North Island , who in turn were defeated by the Ngāi Tahu in the 17th century and moved south.

The settlement was built around a ferry dock that was set up in 1862 with overnight accommodation.

Infrastructure

The New Zealand State Highway 1 and the South Island Main Trunk Railway , which has a stop in Clarence , run through the settlement .

Shipwreck

On April 11, 1886, the ship Taiaroa ran aground in front of the mouth of the Clarence River in the Pacific Ocean. Of the 48 passengers and crew members on board, only 18 were rescued. The 30 victims of the shipwreck were buried behind the church in Clarence .
