Clarens is a city in the South African province of Free State . It is located in the municipality Dihlabeng Local Municipality in the district Thabo Mofutsanyana . In 2011 it had 751 inhabitants.

The neighboring township of Kgubetswana had 5628 inhabitants. Clarens lies at 1,891 meters above sea level. The area around the city is known for its sandstone mountains , after which the Clarens sandstone formation was named in South Africa's lithostratigraphy . The distance to the Golden Gate Highlands National Park is 18 kilometers, to Bethlehem 40 kilometers.

history

The city was founded in 1912. It is named after the Swiss town of the same name (now part of Montreux ), where the former South African President Paul Kruger spent his last days in exile.

In 2018, fossils of a dinosaur were discovered near Clarens, which, at around twelve meters in length, is said to have been the largest animal living on land at the time. He was given the name Ledumahadi mafube .

Attractions

Today the city is known as the residence of numerous artists. With its many galleries and cafés, it is a popular destination for excursions.
