Claude-Joseph-Alexandre Bertrand
Claude-Joseph-Alexandre Bertrand (born January 10, 1734 in Besançon ; † January 16, 1797 ibid) was a French architect who built many buildings in the city of Besançon.
Life
Claude-Joseph-Alexandre Bertrand was born the son of a shoemaker . After initially becoming a drawing teacher at the École d'artillerie, he was appointed city architect of Besançon in 1774. In this capacity he worked until 1790; he was heavily influenced by Parisian architecture.
Bertrand had the Granvelle promenade and Parc de Chamars built, he built the Saint-Pierre church and the houses around the Hôtel Terrier de Santans and the Hôtel Henrion de Magnoncourt .
He also directed the construction of the Besançon Municipal Theater, which was built according to plans by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux . Bertrand drafted the plans for the castle in Moncley and converted the castle in Champlitte .
Alongside Claude Antoine Colombot , he is the best representative of classicism in Besançon and Franche-Comté.
