from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Claude Auvry (* in the 17th century in the Île-de-France , † in the 18th century in Cernay-la-Ville ) was a French Cistercian , prior and religious historian. He should not be confused with Claude Auvry (1606–1687), Bishop of Coutances .

life and work

Cistercians

Claude Auvry entered the monastery of Les Vaux-de-Cernay (near Rambouillet ). From 1686 to 1698 he was prior in the monastery of Champagne (northwest of Le Mans ), from 1698 to 1712 prior in the monastery of Savigny (northeast of Fougères ). In both cases he must be regarded as the actual superior of the convent, since the abbots as commendatars did not normally work on site at this time. Abbot in Savigny was Jacques Bénigne Bossuet's nephew (of the same name) since 1691 . In 1712 Auvry went back to his professed monastery at his own request and died there at an unknown time.

Order historian

Auvry left behind an extensive manuscript on the history of the Congregation of Savigny (comprising 75 monasteries) in the Savigny Monastery (today in the Fougères City Library) . Auguste Laveille (1856–1928) published the text in 3 volumes at the end of the 19th century. He also succeeded in identifying the author under the code PDCAPDS (par Dom Claude Auvry prieur de Savigny) and determining a minimum of biographical data.
