Claude Black

Claude Black (* 1932 in Detroit , Michigan ; † January 17, 2013 ) was an American jazz pianist .

Black grew up in Detroit; He had his first piano lessons with his grandmother. He was then a French horn player in a school band that also included Donald Byrd . At the age of 16 he made his first professional appearances in a club called Uncle Tom's Plantation in Detroit. In 1948, like Byrd, he recorded sextets with the Robert Barnes ; he also played with Billie Holiday . In the 1950s he played a. a. with Charlie Parker , Stan Getz and Wes Montgomery . He toured with Dakota Staton in the early 1960s , then played with Earl Bostic, and toured with Aretha Franklin in 1965 . He taught at the University of Toledo and worked with bassist Clifford Murphy for forty years, twenty of them in his club Murphy's Place . Claude Black participated in eleven recording sessions in the field of jazz from 1948 to 2012, including a. with David Fathead Newman ( Cookin 'at Murphy’s ). With Irvin Stokes and Oliver Jackson he played the album Broadway in Paris in 1984 . The albums Live at the Peristyle (2000) and Nature of Jazz were created under their own name .
