Claude Schaefer (born August 13, 1913 in Breslau ; died February 21, 2010 in Fontainebleau (Seine-et-Marne) ) was a Franco-German art historian.

Life

Claude Schaefer began studying art history in Hamburg and Munich in 1932. After the transfer of power to the National Socialists in 1933, he fled to Paris, where he was accepted by Henri Focillon . His parents had to emigrate from Germany to Uruguay in 1937 and Schaefer succeeded in following them from occupied France via French North Africa to Montevideo during the Second World War in 1942 . After the end of the war he received his doctorate in Paris in 1946. Schaefer went to Brandeis University and Chatham College in Pittsburgh as a professor in 1961 . From 1963 to 1972 he was a professor at the Université de Montréal and finally returned to France, where he completed his habilitation in Paris in 1972 with a thesis on Jean Fouquet and taught as a professor at the University of Tours until 1978 . Schaefer studied Jean Fouquet well into old age and in 1994 he presented a comprehensive monograph on him, for which he again used the German language.
