Claude Viterbo (born April 20, 1961 in Geneva ) is a French mathematician who deals with symplectic geometry .

Viterbo attended the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris and studied from 1980 at the École normal supérieure (ENS). In 1983 he acquired the Agrégation in mathematics there, received his doctorate in 1985 ( Thèse de troisieme cycle ) and qualified as a professor in 1989 ( Topologie symplectique et systèmes Hamiltoniens ). His doctoral supervisor was François Laudenbach (and Ivar Ekeland ). He was then a professor at the École polytechnique and later at the ENS.

Building on the work of Laudenbach and Jean-Claude Sikorav, he further developed the method of the generating function in symplectic topology. In 1987 he proved the Weinstein conjecture (after Alan Weinstein ) for all contact hypersurfaces in .

In 1991 he gave the Cours Peccot at the Collège de France and in the same year he received the Prix Carrière de l'Académie des Sciences . In 1993 he received the Prix Scientifique IBM de Mathématiques . From 1995 to 2000 he was a member of the Institut universitaire de France . In 2011 he was Samuel Eilenberg visiting professor at Columbia University in New York .

He was invited speaker at the 1994 International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich ( Generating functions, symplectic topology and applications ). In 1992 he was invited speaker at the European Congress of Mathematicians in Paris ( Properties of embedded Lagrange manifolds ).
