from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Albert Fathi (born October 27, 1951 in Egypt ) is an Egyptian- French mathematician . He deals with dynamic systems and is currently a professor at the École normal supérieure de Lyon .

Fathi attended the Collège des frères Lasalle in Cairo and grew up bilingually (French, Arabic). At the age of ten he came to Paris as a political refugee and studied at the École normal supérieure in Saint-Cloud . He received his doctorate in 1980 under Laurence Siebenmann at the University of Paris-South (Transformations et homéomorphismes préservant la mesure). From 1987 to 1992 he was a professor at the University of Florida . Since 1992 he has been teaching at the ENS in Lyon (Unité de mathématiques pures et appliquées, UMPA). He also taught at the École polytechnique .

He was visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study (1986/87), at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Instituto de Matemática Interdisciplinar), in Nanjing , Cambridge and at the MSRI . In 2013 he received the Sophie Germain Prize . He is a member of the Institut Universitaire de France.

He was speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2014 in Seoul (Weak KAM Theory: the connection between Aubry-Mather theory and viscosity solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation).
