Claudine Longet and Andy Williams (1972)

Claudine Georgette Longet (born January 29, 1942 in Paris ) is a French former singer and actress who first came to prominence on television in the 1960s at the side of her then husband Andy Williams . With a number of easy listening records, she was also successful regardless of her husband. Her artistic career was overshadowed in March 1976 when she shot her then partner, ski star Vladimir Sabich .

Life

After moving to the United States at the age of 18, Longet first worked as a showgirl at the Folies Bergère Show in Las Vegas , where she met her future first husband, crooner Andy Williams . From the marriage with Williams (1961-1975) three children were born.

As a singer, Longet signed a record deal with the A&M record label in 1966 , which at that time was enjoying great success, particularly in the area of easy listening music. In 1966 she released her debut single Meditation in this style . Five albums for A&M and a few singles followed, four of which made it into the top 100 of the US singles chart . She has been listed on Billboard's easy-listening charts nine times. Here was Hello, Hello (1967) in eighth place their greatest success. Among other things, Tommy LiPuma produced some of their records. Longet's most successful album, her debut Claudine , sold 500,000 copies and was awarded gold. She more or less stayed true to the easy listening style until the end of her recording career in 1974. By this time she had recorded two more albums for the Barnaby label, which belonged to her husband Andy Williams. 1974 appeared there with Who Broke Your Heart And Made You Write That Song Longet's last single. Another album, Sugar Me , was initially unreleased and was not released until 1993 in Japan.

Her acting career was limited - with the exception of the role of Michele Monet on the side of Peter Sellers in the Blake Edwards film hit Der Partyschreck ( 1968 ), in which she sang the song Nothing to Lose - largely on television films and series. She played her last role in 1975 in the television film The Legendary Curse of the Hope Diamond .

The criminal case

In 1974, Longet moved to Aspen , Colorado with her partner, ski racer Vladimir "Spider" Sabich , where a fatal incident occurred on March 21, 1976. Longet was arrested on suspicion of having shot her significant other while he was taking a shower and was in the process of getting dressed. At the trial, Longet testified that the gun went off when Sabich showed her how it worked. Although the autopsy showed that Sabich was shot from behind from a distance of about two meters, she was believed in court.

In addition, there was a serious mistake by the Aspen Police Department; this had illegally acquired evidence so that it could not be used in court. On the one hand it was a blood sample from Longet and on the other hand it was her diary. The blood sample contained cocaine, and the diary showed the poor state of the relationship. The pistol was also not handled professionally; she was wrapped in a towel and disappeared for three days.

The trial received a tremendous amount of attention in the US press. Longet was accompanied on every day of the trial by her ex-husband Andy Williams, who not only firmly believed in her innocence, but also maintained a friendship with her decades later.

The jury acquitted Longet of the murder charge, but found her guilty of negligent homicide . She was sentenced to 30 days in prison. After serving her sentence, she went on vacation with her defense attorney, Ron Austin, who left his wife and children for it. In 1985 she married Austin. The couple have been living in seclusion since then in Aspen.

Following the criminal case, the Sabich family initiated civil proceedings to sue Longet. The case was eventually settled out of court, on the condition that Longet never speak in public about the negligent homicide or the out-of-court settlement or write a book.

Longet has withdrawn completely from the public eye since the trial, but she has twice given up her self-chosen exile. In 2003 she was in a documentary about her ex-husband Andy Williams. Two years later she wrote the liner notes for the booklet of the compilation Hello, Hello: The Best of Claudine Longet , which contains 25 recordings of her singing career. There is no reference to the criminal case in the detailed biographical part of the booklet.

Others

The Longet-Sabich case was picked up by the music group The Rolling Stones in the title Claudine , which was intended as the opening track for their album Emotional Rescue (1980), but was withdrawn for legal reasons. It finally appeared in 2011 in a reworking of the album Some Girls .
