Claudius Apollinaris († around 175 ) was Bishop of Hieropolis in Phrygia and a Christian apologist . He is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox Churches .

Claudius Apollinaris was possibly the predecessor of Aberkios in the episcopate of the Phrygian city of Hieropolis. In his writings he turned against Montanism in particular , which was becoming increasingly widespread in Phrygia, and had Montanus, the founder of the Montanists, excommunicated at a church meeting in Hieropolis in 170 or 171 . Claudius Apollinaris wrote an apologetic work in defense of Christianity to Emperor Mark Aurel . In it, he refers to the rain miracles in Quad country during the Marcomanni wars , attributing it to God returns, while the Romans, to this end the intervention of their own gods responsible.

It is unclear in which city Claudius Apollinaris died. In the Florarium Sanctorum , a burial of an Apollinaris in Antioch in Pisidia is mentioned for June 1st , which is immediately adjacent to Phrygia, so that this could be the bishop of Hieropolis. The feast day of St. Claudius Apollinaris is in the Greek Orthodox Church on February 7th and in the Roman Catholic Church on January 8th .
