Claus Midow , also Hercules Midow († 1602 in Güstrow ) was a German stonemason and sculptor.

Life

As a stonemason and sculptor, Midow worked for the Flemish sculptor Philipp Brandin during the renovation of the Schwerin Palace in 1563/1564. Around 1570 he worked as a builder for the Danish imperial court master Peder Oxe in Denmark. Midow was still effective as an assistant to Hans Fleming 1570–72 at the Lübeck town hall , where they jointly created the Renaissance porch on the market side . In 1594 he succeeded Brandin as court architect for Duke Ulrich von Mecklenburg in Güstrow. Works by him can be found in Rostock and in Güstrow Cathedral . He created four sandstone epitaphs for Putbus and the altar of theMaria Magdalena Church in the Vilmnitz district of Putbus. The altarpiece and the epitaphs of the Hahn family in the Basedow church are attributed to his workshop.

Together with Brandin, he was one of the representatives of the Floris circle in the North German Renaissance and led this over to the Baroque on the southern Baltic coast.
