Epitaphs

The church of St. Maria Magdalena zu Vilmnitz is a late Romanesque / Gothic brick church in the Putbus district of Vilmnitz .

history

The church was first mentioned on May 17, 1249: the parish "Vylmenytze" belongs to the inheritance of Borante de Borantenhagen and was founded by his ancestors . Presumably the church can be traced back to Stoislaw I , a brother of the Rügen prince Jaromar I , who lived around 1200.

The church was built on an elevation on the outskirts of the village, it is clearly divided into three parts. The structures are the three-storey square tower, the nave and the choir that just ends. The oldest part of the Vilmnitz Church is the east choir with the sacristy , which still has clear early Gothic elements, i.e. from the time before 1300. The four-bay nave dates from the middle of the 14th century and was renewed in the 15th century; the tower was completed a little later. From 1351 at the latest, the Vilmnitzer Church was used as a burial place for the von Putbus family until 1860. At least in the 14th century, the time on the neighboring island belonged Vilm located Vilmer chapel to the parish church Vilmnitzer.

In the nave, buttresses are connected by pointed arches, giving the impression of varying light intensities.

Furnishing

High altar

According to an inscription, the altar was donated in 1603 by the brothers Erdmann, Ernst, Ludwig, Volkmar , Wolf and Philip von Putbus . It was built from sandstone and consists of the base with the Last Supper relief, the main field and a double top. For the 17th century, the structure with predella is common. The side figures stand on consoles, the middle part is worked with marble columns as a frame. The sculptural group in the lower part of the essay is unusual. It shows the last supper . The arched opening of the middle part is broken, in it the crucifixion of Jesus according to the Gospel of John is shown. Instead of the side cheeks, consoles with the figures of the four evangelists were installed. The relief of the essay shows the first encounter between Mary Magdalene and Jesus. after the resurrection .

Putbus family crypt

In the church under the east choir is the family crypt of those at Putbus with twenty-eight coffins. The city founder of Putbus, Prince Wilhelm Malte I, and his wife were also buried here. They were the last people to be buried there (1854 and 1860), as the mausoleum in Putbuser Park had been the burial place of the princely family of Putbus since 1867.

In the church are the richly decorated sarcophagi of Malte Graf zu Putbus and his wife Magdalena Juliana, made from limestone around 1730. At the cemetery was "Franz Wilhelm Prince of Putbus" 28.5.1927-5.4.2004 interred. His grave plate adorns the prince. Coat of arms, flanked by two "wild men" with a battle club and helmet.

Baroque pulpit

Hans Broder, a Stralsund carpenter, made the hexagonal pulpit out of wood in 1709. Together with the confessional, which was also manufactured by Broder, it forms a unit. A figure of Moses serves as the base of the pulpit. The staircase to the pulpit is richly decorated with fruit hangings and putti heads. In the four fields of the basket there are figures of the evangelists. The lectern is carried by an angel's head. The virtues are shown figuratively on the sound cover . The pulpit is crowned by an angel with a wing.

Epitaphs

The four epitaphs are located in pairs on the south and north walls. In detail there are the tombs of:

  • Ludwig Herr zu Putbus † 1594
  • Anna Maria Countess of Hohenstein, † 1595
  • Erdmann Herr zu Putbus, † 1622
  • Sabine Hedwig Countess von Eberstein, † 1631

The structure of the epitaphs is similar, various relief-like representations are reminiscent of the deceased.

organ

Gallery with organ

The church probably had an organ before 1640 ; however, its manufacturer is not known. This organ was hardly playable in the middle of the 19th century (1863) and was replaced by the current organ. This organ on the west gallery comes from the Stralsund organ builder Friedrich Albert Mehmel ; it was built in 1866 and restored in 1996.

Say about the giant Balderich

The giant Balderich , according to the fairy tale by Ernst Moritz Arndt , was very angry about the construction of the church. When it was finished, he went to the Putbuser Tannenberg and hurled a huge stone at the church in order to smash it. But he threw too far and the "giant stone" fell into the field near Nadelitz, where it is still lying today.

Others

For over 25 years there have been evening organ concerts on Thursdays in the summer months.

The church was the location for the film Die Heiden von Kummerow and their funny pranks in 1967 .

The Protestant parish has been part of the Stralsund Propstei in the Pomeranian Evangelical Church District of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany since 2012 . Before that she belonged to the Stralsund parish of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church .
