Friedrich Albert Mehmel
Friedrich Albert Daniel Mehmel (born December 6, 1827 in Allstedt , Thuringia , † July 4, 1888 in Stralsund ) was a German organ builder in Stralsund. He is considered the most important Pomeranian organ builder of his time alongside Barnim Grüneberg .
Life
Friedrich Albert Mehmel began his apprenticeship in 1845 and then worked for Ibach in Bremen, Julius Strobel in Frankenhausen, Johann Friedrich Schulze in Paulinzella and Friedrich Ladegast . Ladegast had a strong influence on his sound ideas. The influence of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll on Mehmel's work can also be explained through him .
From 1856 he worked for Matthias Fernau in Stralsund and in 1858 took over his workshop on the Appolonienmarkt . On May 21, 1859, Mehmel received citizenship in Stralsund. His work extended from Cuxhaven to Western Pomerania, but he was mainly active in Western Pomerania, where he alone had 45 new organs built. Because of the high demand, he opened a branch in Wismar, Mecklenburg in 1874. Up to 14 workers were employed in his Stralsund workshop in the house built according to his plans; he probably had a lot of things done at home. He himself always worked hard; He was involved from design to final assembly and intonation. Friedrich August Mehmel only built mechanical organs, mostly with slide chests.
His son Paul Daniel Mehmel (* April 4, 1868, † July 21, 1894) took over the workshops as FA Mehmel's son Stralsund and Wismar after his father's death in 1888 , but died himself soon afterwards.
