Matthias Fernau

Matthias Fernau (* 1822 , † 1858 ) was a German organ builder in Stralsund .

Life

Matthias Fernau came from Heinebach in Kurhessen. In 1845 he was a journeyman with Friedrich Bechstein from Rotenburg an der Fulda in the church in Ersrode , as an inscription on the organ says. Then he went to Stralsund and opened an organ building workshop on the Appoloniemarkt. On April 28, 1855 he received the citizenship of the city.

Matthias Fernau partly worked with Johann Friedrich Nerlich . His pupil Friedrich Albert Mehmel married Fernau's widow after his early death in 1858 and took over the workshop. He became one of the most important organ builders in Western Pomerania of his time. There are few and partly contradicting information about the work of Matthias Fernau.
