history

The construction of the church under the patronage of St. George began in the first half of the 13th century. The nave was built around 1250 . Around 1300 the choir was given a five-sided end and large, ogival windows.

Around 1820 the church was in danger of collapsing. However, it was secured with supporting arches and anchors. For aesthetic reasons, decorated anchors were chosen that do not apply the necessary tension. Cracks that appeared later in the vault and in the walls were filled and new securing with anchors was planned. The implementation of the project is currently failing due to a lack of financial resources.

The lowering of the walls could be stopped by means of a drainage system.

The basilica is one of the earliest brick churches Vorpommern by the German Foundation for Monument Protection classified as "Building of country significance."

location

The church is on the banks of the Barthe . A listed parish garden extends along the north side of the cemetery surrounding the church . A support association restored the flower ground floor, the pleasure garden and the part of the landscape with orchards based on the historical model of “the diverse pastorate gardens of the 18th century”.

Exterior

The three-nave and three-bay , from brick built basilica has a vault height of 12.58 meters, making it unusually large for a village church of a small town.

The plastered gable side of the towerless church is decorated with patterns. A pointed arch frieze with unglazed and glazed shaped bricks extends under the eaves .

Furnishing

The oldest piece is a made of Scandinavian marble existing font with Romanesque features.

Remains of paintings are visible under the interior plaster, such as a Baroque depiction of Christophorus in one of the north window niches. Its renovation was planned for 2008.

organ

The exceptionally large organ was made around 1860 by the Stralsund organ builder Friedrich Albert Mehmel . The instrument with its very basic tones has 17  registers on two manuals and a pedal and has an original gold application by the Barther painter Douzette. Not playable since around 1970, it was restored from 2004 to 2009 for 140,000 euros, including funds from the EU's LEADER4 fund, and officially re-inaugurated on May 2, 2010 with a concert.
