Claus Nikolaus Schedl CSsR (born August 3, 1914 in Oberloisdorf , † June 19, 1986 in Sankt Stefan ob Leoben ) was an Austrian Roman Catholic theologian and religious priest of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer .

Life

Schedl took the Redemptorist vows in 1932 , studied theology at the Philosophical-Theological Religious School in Mautern in Styria from 1934 and was ordained a priest in 1939. The degree took place in 1940 at the extraterritorial educational institution in Puchheim , after the Mautern Monastery had been dissolved under the occupation by the National Socialists . Released from military service for health reasons, Schedl completed doctoral studies in Vienna (Catholic theology) and Tübingen ( Semitic studies with a focus on Arabic and Syriac ). In 1942 he received his doctorate in Vienna and in 1943 in Tübingen. He completed his habilitation in the field of Old Testament biblical studies in 1947 and then worked in Vienna and at the reopened Redemptorist School in Mautern.

From 1951 to 1960 Schedl traveled extensively in the Near and Middle East under difficult conditions , where he was arrested several times and came under fire. From 1952 he taught at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz, where he was appointed full professor for Biblical theology in 1967. In 1978 the chair was converted into the Institute for Religious Studies, Schedl remained there until his retirement in 1984.

Karl Prenner praised Schedl as a “bridge builder between religions”. Schedl pioneered the influences and connections between the religions and tried to convey a positive image of Muhammad in a Christian context.
