Cleistocactus variispinus is a species of plant in the genus Cleistocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet variispinus means 'different spines'.

description

Cleistocactus variispinus grows as a shrub with upright shoots branching at the base to the middle of the shoot and reaches heights of 50 to 100 centimeters with diameters of 3 to 5 centimeters. There are 14 to 18 indistinctly notched ribs . The white areoles on it are close together. The 30 to 40 straight, needle-like thorns are light yellow to golden yellow or brownish yellow and 1 to 4 inches long. One or two of them are significantly longer. It is difficult to distinguish between central and radial spines. Areoles capable of flowering are often covered with deviating, bristle-like thorns.

The straight, more or less horizontally protruding flowers are up to 4.8 centimeters long. The carmine to orange-red flower tube is covered with numerous white flakes. The upright bracts are whitish and have pale green tips. The spherical, purple-red fruits reach a diameter of up to 2 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cleistocactus variispinus is distributed in the Bolivian department of La Paz at altitudes of about 2000 meters. It was first described in 1964 by Friedrich Ritter .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
