Clemens Giese

Clemens Giese (born April 19, 1879 in Arnsberg ; † February 5, 1961 in Arnsberg) was a staff veterinarian, employee in the Reich Health Office and Ministry of the Interior and one of the pioneers of German animal welfare.

Life

He was born in Arnsberg in 1879. After attending primary school and the Laurentianum grammar school in Arnsberg , Giese studied veterinary medicine . During his studies he became a member of the Obotritia Berlin fraternity in 1900 . The doctor of veterinary medicine then became a staff veterinarian. In 1910 Giese came to the Reich Health Office . From 1925 he took over the management of the veterinary department in the Reich Ministry of the Interior. Five years later he became a ministerial advisor. During the Nazi era, Clemens Giese and the lawyer Waldemar Kahler were responsible for drawing up the first German Animal Welfare Act (then the Reich Animal Welfare Act of November 24, 1933). On January 10, 1936, the German Society for Animal Psychology was founded in Berlin. Giese was a member of the company's original advisory board. After the Second World War, Giese became the head of the veterinary department in the Agriculture and Forestry Administration of the Soviet-occupied Zone. From there he went back to Arnsberg in 1948. He played a key role in the meat inspection law and gave impetus to convene the World Animal Protection Congress. Giese was Vice President of the World Animal Protection Association until his death in 1961 .

Honors

In 1954 he was appointed ministerial director to compensate for his resignation during the Nazi era. On March 9, 1957, Giese received the Great Cross of Merit . On the occasion of his 80th year of life, he received an honorary doctorate from the Free University of Berlin in 1959 .
