Clifford H. Stockwell

Clifford Howard Stockwell (born September 26, 1897 in Estevan , † April 26, 1987 in Ottawa ) was a Canadian geologist, petrograph and mineralogist.

Stockwell received his bachelor's degree from the University of British Columbia in 1924 and received his doctorate in geology from the University of Wisconsin in 1930 (Pegmatite dykes and associated rocks of southeastern Manitoba and adjacent portions of Ontario). He worked for the Geological Survey of Canada and dealt with many topics, including the crystal structure of the garnet group , which he examined with X-rays, the formation of pegmatites in southwestern Manitoba and reservoir science, for example of gold and chrome deposits in Canada. In 1932 he mapped the Great Slave Lakein largely unexplored areas of the Precambrian Shield of Canada. He later led the reclassification of Precambrian rocks based on dating with radioactive isotopes at the Geological Survey. A corresponding tectonic map of the Canadian shield appeared in 1969.

In 1953 he received the Willet G. Miller Medal and in 1973 the Logan Medal . He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada .
