Clue of the Twisted Candle (translated "The Secret of the Curved Candle") is a British crime film directed by Allan Davis from 1960 . It was produced by the film company Merton Park Studios . The script was written by James Eastwood and is based on the novel of the same name by Edgar Wallace . The film was the second part of the Edgar Wallace Mysteries , a series of 47 Edgar Wallace film adaptations made by Merton Park Studios between 1960 and 1965; it was never shown in Germany.

action

The film tells the story of Lexman, a writer who was arrested for murder and sent to prison. Superintendent Meredith takes over the investigation, believing Lexman to be innocent. At the same time, he seeks revenge against the blackmailer Ramon Karadis, through whom he feels betrayed. Lexman breaks out of jail just before Meredith can secure his release. Karadis is found murdered a short time later and although Meredith initially believes in Lexman's innocence and interrogates numerous suspects, he is convicted of the murder.

Reviews

In their Das Edgar Wallace Lexikon from 2004, Joachim Kramp and Jürgen Wehnert cite a daily cinema review of the film. Accordingly, the film was "a little old-fashioned in the basic concept of Edgar Wallace, despite the film adaptation brought to" modern standards. "The critics cite" too many entanglements in the script. "" The red herrings would fill Billingsgate , "wrote the critics and noted that the many entanglements would likely be welcomed by the audience, and perhaps the melodramatic entanglements and snares could even bring a box office hit. The actors Bernard Lee as Superintendent Meredith and David Knight as Lexman were praised.
