The Coal River is a left tributary of the Kanawha River in the US state of West Virginia .
The Coal River arises in Alum Creek at the confluence of the Big Coal River (right) and Little Coal River (left). From there it flows in a north-northwest direction in numerous meanders past the tornado to Saint Albans , where it flows into the Kanawha River, which flows westwards. The Coal River has a length of 30 km and drains an area of about 2280 km². At the Tornado gauge, the mean discharge is 35 m³ / s.
The river and its two headwaters are a popular destination for canoeists and kayakers .
