The Coal Rock ( English for coal rock ) is a striking and 1390 m high nunatak in the West Antarctic Queen Elizabeth Land . It rises 6 km southeast of Fierle Peak at the southern end of the Forrestal Range in the Pensacola Mountains .
The United States Geological Survey mapped it on the basis of its own measurements and aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1956 to 1966. The American geologist Dwight L. Schmidt named it after the Permian coal that can be found in the rock of Nunatak.
