Coatsland is a region in East Antarctica that connects to the west of the Princess Martha Coast belonging to Queen Maud Land and thus forms the eastern coast of the Weddell Sea . It extends in an orientation from southwest to northeast between the 20th and 36th degree west latitude . The northeastern part was discovered by William Speirs Bruce , who led the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition (1902-1904). He named the region after the brothers, entrepreneurs and philanthropists James Coats Jr. (1841–1912) and Andrew Coats (1862–1930), the most important supporters of the expedition. The southern (western) part of the area west of 27 ° 54 ′ 0 ″ W is the Prinzregent-Luitpold-Land . The stretch of coast to the east is the Caird Coast .

From December 1914 to January 1915, the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton continued his exploration south with his endurance expedition (1914-1916), exploring the land that the German polar explorer Wilhelm Filchner had discovered in 1912 on the Second German Antarctic Expedition (1911-1912 ) discovered Germany on board the expedition ship . Shackleton began his explorations aboard the Endurance on the Caird coast.
