Adoration of the Magi, with the text from the Gospel of Matthew

The Codex Aureus Pultoviensis (also Plocker Evangelistar) is a parchment manuscript that is counted among the Codices Aurei because of its rich illumination and the use of gold ink .

history

The codex was probably created in the second half of the 11th century in Bavaria (Regensburg), older opinions assign it to a miniature school in Prague . He was once in the cathedral of Płock and with Judith of Bohemia (* around 1056-1058; † December 25, 1086, buried in the cathedral in Płock), the wife of Władysław I Herman . It came into the possession of the Czartoryski family via Pułtusk and is now kept as Ms. 1207 in the Czartoryski Museum , a department of the National Museum in Cracow .

description

The Evangelistary comprises 171 sheets in the format 35 cm × 25.5 cm and contains the pericopes with the liturgical readings for the entire church year as well as nine full-page canon tables. Gold ink was used for the text font - Capitalis with a few uncial elements. 13 miniatures, including the author's pictures of the four evangelists , take up the entire page, text is linked to miniatures on five pages, which only take up half of the sheet. The book decoration includes frame strips that are designed with geometric, vegetable or zoomorphic motifs. Zoomorphic motifs can also be found in initials .

Splendid binding

As with codices from the Carolingian and Ottonian times, the cover of the Codex Aureus Pultoviensis is richly and preciously adorned with precious figurative representations, molten gold, enamel tablets made of Limoges , precious stones and ornamental decorations. The main accent is a representation of the crucified as a king according to Byzantine typology on the background of an enamel cross with enamel work. However, it is a modern work that used materials from around 1300.
