description

Cod. Pal. germ. 3, sheet 1v
Cod. Pal. germ. 3, sheet 3r

The codex is a parchment manuscript with 16 written sheets, plus three blank sheets of paper after the front mirror and in front of the rear mirror . The foliation of the 17th century counts the 16 written parchment pages (sheets 1r – 16v); the front and back sheets of paper are provided with modern counting (sheets 1r * –3v * and 4r * –6v *).

The sheet size of the codex is 34.5 × 20.5 cm, with a writing space of 22 × 17 cm with 28 lines per page; a line structure is drawn in ink. The leaves are rounded off in a semicircle at a height of 25 cm. The first two sheets (1r – 2v) are tables laid out in three columns; leaves 3r – 16v have continuous text with one pair of rhymes per line.

Continuous writing is a textura of two hands. In the semicircles above the writing area, there are miniatures from a third hand created at about the same time : On the first two sheets, depictions of the sun (sheet 1r) and the moon (1v – 2v, figurative: crescent moon with face). On the following sheets there are pen drawings of the wise men and prophets; executed, partly sketchy, but still clearly recognizable on sheets 3r, 3v, 5v, 6r, 7v, 8r, 13v, 14v, 15r, 15v, not at all recognizable on the other sheets, apart from names written in ink.

The manuscript has a Roman parchment binding from the 17th century.

origin

The manuscript was probably written towards the end of the 14th century and probably by Elector Ludwig III. acquired by the Palatinate (1378–1436). The inventory entry “Ein Loss book vff parchment written” in the younger castle library from 1610 may refer to this copy.

The writing language is South Rhine-Franconian.

The old Roman signature 1830 can be found on sheet 16v . Like the other manuscripts of the Electoral Palatinate Libraries, the Codex came into the possession of the Vatican Library in Rome after the conquest of the Electoral Palatinate in the Thirty Years War in 1622 and was only brought to Heidelberg in 1816 with the other German-language holdings of the Palatina as part of the regulations during the Congress of Vienna returned.

Content

The manuscript contains a lunar prophecy book ( Losbuch ) on sheets 1r – 16v , a script with predictions derived from the 28-day lunar month , on sheets 1r – 2v in the form of instruction tables, on the following sheets in the form of lines of rhymes.
