The Colegio Humboldt Caracas (short: CHC) is a private German-Venezuelan encounter school in Caracas ( Venezuela ). In 2012 the school was awarded the Excellent German School Abroad seal of approval by the German state . Because of its great commitment to environmental protection , the school calls itself a “Green School”. It is about 1000 m above sea level and borders the El Ávila National Park .

School profile

The CHC currently (as of 1/2020) offers 366 female and 393 male students a German-language education from kindergarten to high school . At times the teaching staff consisted of 70 Venezuelan and 19 German teachers. The Colegio Humboldt Caracas is an all-day school . In the afternoon there is not only homework supervision, but also sports activities such as volleyball , basketball , soccer, athletics , swimming, karate , chess and gymnastics , and cultural activities such as music, choir, art, theater and debating . The CHC is equipped with several sports fields, a swimming pool and a library, among other things. At the CHC, both the highest Venezuelan educational qualification, the Bachelorato , and the German International Abitur can be achieved.

Education focus: languages

The children learn German from kindergarten, which is already integrated in some subjects in the primary school curriculum. The students in grades 8 and 9 can acquire the German language diploma level I (DSD I), the students in grades 11 and 12 the German language diploma level II (DSD II). From year 5 onwards, English is added as a further foreign language. French is offered from grade 7.

social commitment

The pupils are involved in working with children and young people as well as in work with the elderly. A minimum of 60 hours of social work is (by law) mandatory. An important partner of the social commitment is the non-profit association AVAS (Asociación Venezolana - Alemana De Socorro), which benefits greatly from the commitment of the Humboldt students.

Competitions

The students of the Colegio Humboldt regularly take part successfully in national and international competitions.

  • 2019/2020 - Model United Nation - Invitation to the European qualifying in Heilbronn in March 2020 (corona-related cancellation of the event).
  • 2019/2020 - Maths in Advent - individual prices for 5 students (including a 1st prize), participation in the award ceremony in Berlin.
  • 2019/2020 - Teens4elderly - 1st prize for 7 schoolchildren in class 11. The theme of the 2019/2020 competition was the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in seniors using digital media.

criticism

The salaries of Venezuelan teachers are low compared to German teachers' salaries. The reason for this is the very low parental contributions - for a private school - of now less than 50 US dollars per month. This is not least due to a peculiarity of the Venezuelan system, according to which only the parents can set the amount of school fees. The funds coming from Germany are earmarked and may not be used to pay Venezuelan teachers.

In spring 2020 - without the consent of the parents, with the approval of the Venezuelan Ministry of Education - the amount of school fees was reset. An additional payment was made. The salaries of Venezuelan teachers have been adjusted accordingly and are now in the upper mid-range when measured against the salaries of private schools in the country. More than half of the Venezuelan teachers also receive a language bonus (for their German language skills) of up to EUR 300 per month.

Political problems

The country's political and economic crisis particularly affects the poor (or impoverished) sections of the Venezuelan population. The Colegio Humboldt Caracas is affected to the extent that problems with the infrastructure lead to occasional failures in the electricity, water or internet supply. In recent years, various precautions have been taken to avoid or minimize missed lessons: Acquisition of emergency power generators (school administration and school's own copier) and water tanks (school toilets), parallel contracts with several Internet providers (school's own WLAN).

Corona: Face-to-face teaching was suspended at all schools in Venezuela on March 13, 2020, and at the beginning of April 2020 the government decided to end the school year with online lessons. The Colegio Humboldt Caracas had already developed the “learning at home” concept in 2018/2019, on the basis of which classes are currently being continued online (as of June 2020).

history

An overview of the school's history can be found on the school's website.

1894

On May 15, 1894, the CHC with the name "German School" (Colegio Alemán) was founded on the initiative of a group of Venezuelans of German origin and with the active support of the German ambassador Friedrich Wilhelm Graf von Kleist-Tychow .

1898

The school's first location was a rented house in the center of Caracas . The exact address was "Doctor Díaz a Zamuro No. 63" (this no longer exists due to the construction of Av. Bolívar). The second location was "de Bolsa a Padre Sierra No. 22". This neighborhood coincides with today's address Av. Sur 4 across from Capitolio.

1920-1925

After another move, between 1920 and 1925 a small house in Av. Sur 6 No. 32, Muñoz a Pedrera (today Av. Baralt). Due to the international situation, the number of pupils decreased to such an extent that a closure of the school was considered.

1940

With the help of a group of Venezuelan and German supporters, as well as the German government, it became possible to buy a large house, which was in "Mercaderes a Gorda No. 43". After the renovation, the fourth location was inaugurated on February 18, 1925. The school existed there until 1940.

1942

Then the school was moved to a new building in Sabana Grande, today between Calle El Colegio and Av. Casanova. At this location, now the fifth location, the school was given the name “Colegio Humboldt”. As a result of World War II , the school was closed on May 19, 1942 by an official order and the entire property was expropriated.

1952-1953

After the end of the war, the school was reopened between 1952 and 1953. Due to the steadily growing number of students, the house in Sabana Grande became too small. Therefore it became necessary to move the school to another location a sixth time. At the foot of the Ávila , the first building of today's school was built according to a design by the architect FW Beckhoff. This was inaugurated in 1957 and, after several building extensions, the school developed into today's modern Colegio Humboldt.

1998-1999

On the basis of an agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and Venezuela, the German school abroad in Caracas was converted into an encounter school from the 1998–1999 school year.

2019

In March 2019, the German Foreign Ministry called on the remaining 20 German teachers at the school to leave the country due to the political crisis. None of the German teachers responded to this call voluntarily. Four teachers sent from Germany had to leave the country on the instructions of the German supervisory authority. Two of them returned to the CHC in summer 2019, while the contract for the other two teachers ended in summer 2019.
