Colloquium Oecumenicum Paulinum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Colloquium Oecumenicum Paulinum - also Colloquium Paulinum for short - is an international and ecumenical group of New Testament scholars who work on the research and interpretation of Pauline theology . Every two to three years, the Abbey of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome invites the circle to a scientific conference on the letters and theology of the Apostle Paul . The focus of the conference is either a Pauline letter or a subject from Pauline theology. 25 conferences took place from 1968 to 2018.

history

The initiative to found an international and ecumenical discussion group of biblical scholars who work on the theology of the Apostle Paul arose in the context of the 2nd Vatican Council . It was based on Giovanni Battista Franzoni (1928-2017), who was abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Paul Outside the Walls (Rome) from 1964 to 1973, and from Fr. Jacques Dupont OSB (1915–1998), who was part of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Andrew in Bruges (Belgium) and was a professor at the Pontificio Ateneo Sant 'Anselmo in Rome at the time. Both tried to found a circle of friends for Pauline studies during the council. The Studiorum Paulinorum Congressus Internationalis Catholicus , which took place in 1961 at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, can be seen as a forerunner of the Colloquium Paulinum .

The foundation of the Colloquium Paulinum by Dupont and Franzoni was determined by the intention of bringing together an ecumenical community of Paul researchers at the grave of the Apostle of the Nations for exegetical and theological work on his writings. Your scientific work should be guided by the goal of showing the Christian churches a theological path through the apostolic legacy of Paul, on which they can find in their diversity to the unity of the body of Christ.

For the first colloquium from April 16 to 21, 1968, Holy Week of that year, 34 New Testament scholars from several European countries and from all major churches came together in the Abbey of St. Paul Outside the Walls. The Protestant New Testament scholar Eduard Schweizer (1913–2006) from the Theological Faculty of the University of Zurich served as president of this conference . The Colloquium was opened by Christopher Butler (1902–1986), who was then Abbot Praeses of the English Benedictine Congregation. Ten lectures were given on the subject of "Faith and Salvation according to Paul (Rom 1.16)", nine of which are in the anthology Foi et Salut selon S. Paul (Épître aux Romains 1.16), Rome, 1970 (Analecta Biblica 42) were published. Since then, the colloquia have taken place every two years.

The presidents from 1968 to 2018 were: Eduard Schweizer (1968), Jean Jacques von Allmen (1969), Pierre Benoit (1971 and 1972), Charles Kingsley Barrett (1974 and 1985), Werner Georg Kümmel (1976), Sabbas Agouridis (1978 ), Jacques Dupont (1981), Rudolf Schnackenburg (1983), Max-Alain Chevallier (1987), Eduard Lohse (1989), Jan Lambrecht (1992), Albert Vanhoye (1995), Georgios Galitis (1997), Morna D.
