Charles Kingsley Barrett

Charles Kingsley Barrett , FBA (born May 4, 1917 in Salford , † August 26, 2011 ) was a British biblical scholar and Methodist clergyman . He was a professor of theology at the University of Durham and wrote exegetical commentaries on the Acts of the Apostles , the Gospel of John , the Romans , 1st Corinthians and 2nd Corinthians .

Early life and education

Barrett was born in Salford and studied at Shebbear College in Devon, Pembroke College in Cambridge and Wesley House , which is also in Cambridge.

Career

Barrett was ordained to ministerial service in the Methodist Church and in 1945 was appointed lecturer in divinity at the University of Durham, where he was elected professor in 1958. He preached regularly in the Darlington County of the Methodist Church and beyond.

Barrett was seen as on par with Charles Harold Dodd and was referred to as "the greatest British New Testament scholar of the 20th century" and "the greatest UK commentator on New Testament writings since JB Lightfoot ".

Honors

Barrett was elected a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA) in 1961 and was awarded its Burkitt Medal in 1966 . He was president of the SNTS in 1973 .

In 1982 a commemorative publication was published in his honor. Paul and Paulinism: Essays in Honor of CK Barrett includes contributions from Morna Hooker , FF Bruce , I. Howard Marshall , Martin Hengel , and John Painter .
