James DG Dunn

James DG Dunn (born October 21, 1939 in Birmingham - † June 26, 2020 ) was a British New Testament scholar . For many years he was a professor in the Theological Faculty of the University of Durham . After his retirement he received the status of Emeritus Lightfoot Professor. He researched and worked theologically on a broad front from a Protestant tradition.

Dunn is particularly associated with the New Perspective on Paul , which he represented with NT Wright and EP Sanders . He is said to have coined this catchphrase in 1982 as part of the Manson Memorial Lecture. Dunn was also a preacher in his local Methodist church .

Life

Dunn received his Masters and Bachelor degrees in theology from the University of Glasgow . He received his doctorate in philosophy (PhD) and doctorate in theology from the University of Cambridge . From 2002 Dunn was President of New Testament Studies (Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas), the leading international society for New Testament studies. Only three other British scholars were elected to the presidency in the previous 25 years. In 2006 Dunn became a member of the British Academy .

In 2005 a commemorative publication was published in Dunn's honor. It contains contributions from 27 New Testament scholars and is dedicated to the study of early Christianity , in particular beliefs about the Holy Spirit .

Dunn has taken up EP Sanders ' project to redefine and redefine Palestinian Judaism. This served to correct the Christian view of Judaism as a religion of work righteousness . One of the most important differences from Sanders is that Dunn found a fundamental coherence and consistency with Paul's thinking. In addition, he criticized Sanders 'understanding of the term "justification" by criticizing that Sanders' understanding suffers from "individualizing exegesis".

Dunn died in June 2020 at the age of 80.
