The Methodist Church in Britain (formerly the Methodist Church of Great Britain ) is a Methodist church that includes congregations in England , Scotland and Wales, as well as in the Channel Islands , Malta and Gibraltar .

history

The brothers John and Charles Wesley and George Whitefield founded an enthusiastic revival movement within the Anglican Church between 1729 and 1735 after a personal conversion , which absorbed the influences of Puritanism , Pietism and the Moravian Church . In Great Britain, membership of the Methodist churches rose sharply after John Wesley's death; in 1821 they had around 215,000 members, in 1861 around 513,000 members and in 1906 around 800,000 members. Due to organizational and political conflicts, a large number of splits from the original Connexion , the Methodist mainstream , occurred from 1797 onwards . The New Connexion , created in 1797, always remained relatively small (around 17,000 members in 300 congregations in 1851) and in 1907 merged with the United Methodist Free Churches and the Bible Christians to form the United Methodist Church . The Primitive Methodists , founded by Hugh Bourne and William Clowes in 1807/1812, had their focus in regions that were shaped by the structural change of the industrial revolution , such as Durham , Staffordshire , Derbyshire , Norfolk or the north of Wiltshire .

The Methodist Church in Britain was created in 1932 through the merger of the Original Connexion , the Primitive Methodists and the (British) United Methodist Church and thus comprised the majority of British Methodists. In 2013 it had around 209,000 full members (and around 800,000 people with an active relationship with the Church) in around 6,100 congregations. The ordination of women has been practiced for the 1974th The blessing of same-sex couples was discussed and initially rejected by the 2006 conference. However, in 2013 the discussion was reopened and a working group was set up, which presented an interim report in 2014. In July 2019, the conference made it possible for same-sex couples to be married in church.

conference

The Methodist Conference is the legislative body of the Church. The conference takes place annually in June or July. The conference presidency is the highest office in the Church and is held for one year only. Continuity is guaranteed by the secretary of the conference.

Ecumenism

The Methodist Church is a member of numerous ecumenical organizations , such as the World Council of Churches and the World Council of Methodist Churches . At the European level she works in the ( European Council of Methodist Churches ), the Community of Evangelical Churches in Europe and the Conference of European Churches , also in Churches Together in Britain and Ireland .

A merger plan with the Church of England failed due to a few votes in the Anglican General Synod in 1972. In 2003, the two churches, however, have a covenant (covenant) concluded that should lead them to a closer community.
