Albert Cardinal Vanhoye SJ (born July 24, 1923 in Hazebrouck , France , † July 29, 2021 in Rome ) was a Roman Catholic religious priest , theologian and biblical scholar . He has been the oldest living cardinal since the death of Roger Etchegaray on September 4, 2019 .

Life

After joining the Jesuit order on September 11, 1941 and taking his first vows on November 15, 1944, Vanhoye studied literature first at the Sorbonne , from 1947 to 1950 philosophy at the Jesuit college in Vals-près-le-Puy and from 1951 until 1955 theology at the religious college in Enghien in Belgium. On July 25, 1954 he received in Enghien by Henri Dupont , Auxiliary Bishop of Lille , the ordination . Vanhoye then studied biblical exegesis at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome until 1959 .

Albert Vanhoye was professor of exegesis of the New Testament at the Jesuit College in Chantilly from 1959 to 1962 and received his doctorate in 1961 at the Pontifical Biblical Institute with a thesis on the literary structure of the Epistle to the Hebrews . From 1963 until his retirement in 1993 he taught as professor of exegesis of the New Testament at the Roman Pontifical Biblical Institute, where he was dean of the biblical faculty from 1969 to 1975 and rector from 1984 to 1990. His main focus was on the Pauline letters and especially the letter to the Hebrews. He also taught at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Lateran University, and exercised many other activities in the field of science and as a member of various societies. He has also published numerous works in various languages.

In addition, Vanhoye was a member of the Commission for the Preparation of the Apostolic Constitution Sapientia Christiana , from 1978 consultor of the Congregation for Catholic Education , from 1980 to 1996 member of the Council for Christian Unity and from 1990 consultor of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith . In the same year he became secretary of the Biblical Commission . He held this office until 2001.

In the solemn consistory on March 24, 2006 Pope Benedict XVI took him . surprisingly for his theological merits as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Santa Maria della Mercede e Sant'Adriano a Villa Albani in the college of cardinals . At his request, because of his old age, he was exempted from being ordained a bishop.

In 2008 Vanhoye held the fasting retreat for Pope Benedict XVI. From 2008 to 2010 he was Grand Prior of the Order of Constantine .

Pope Francis elevated him to the rank of cardinal priest on June 20, 2016, while retaining his title seat pro hac vice .

Albert Vanhoye died in Rome in July 2021, five days after his 98th birthday.
