Werner Georg Kümmel (born May 16, 1905 in Heidelberg ; † July 9, 1995 in Mainz ) was a German Protestant theologian and professor of the New Testament in Marburg .

Life

Kümmel was the son of the Heidelberg ENT doctor Werner Kümmel of his first wife Marie (a daughter of Heinrich Ulmann ) and thus a grandson of the civil engineer Werner Kümmel and a nephew of the art historian Otto Kümmel ; he was the father of the medical historian Werner Friedrich Kümmel (* 1936) and the ancient orientalist Hans Martin Kümmel and the grandfather of the Indo-Germanist Martin Kümmel . He was also a great-grandson of Jacob Henle through his mother .

From 1923 to 1928 he studied Protestant theology in Heidelberg, Berlin and Marburg, graduating in Heidelberg. He wrote his dissertation on Romans 7 in 1928 with Martin Dibelius . He then worked at universities in England , Marburg (1930–1932), where he was assistant to Hans von Soden , Zurich (1932–1950), Mainz (1951/1952) and Marburg (1952–1973). There he succeeded Rudolf Bultmann and worked as a New Testament scientist until his retirement in 1973. In 1972 he was elected a corresponding member of the British Academy .

Kümmel took over the editing of Jewish writings from the Hellenistic-Roman period. His introduction to the New Testament , which competed with the conservative by Wilhelm Michaelis and the Catholic by Alfred Wikenhauser , was very influential .

One of Kümmel's pupils is Erich Gräßer, a New Testament scholar from Bonn .
