Werner Friedrich Kümmel

Werner Friedrich Kümmel (* 1936 in Zurich ) is a German medical historian.

Life

Werner Friedrich Kümmel is the oldest son of the theologian Werner Georg Kümmel and grew up in Zurich, Mainz and Marburg. He studied history, musicology, classical philology and philosophy in Marburg , Kiel and Göttingen (1963 state examination for higher teaching qualifications). After receiving his doctorate in 1966 at the Philipps University of Marburg as Dr. phil. in the subject Modern History, he was from 1966 to 1969 Fellow of the DFG . From 1970 to 1973 he was an assistant at the Senckenberg Institute for the History of Medicine at the Goethe University . After his habilitation in 1973 for the history of medicine in Frankfurt am Main and appointment as professor, he was professor at the Medical History Institute of the University of Mainz from 1976 to 1985 . From 1986 to 1988 he headed the Institute for the History of Medicine at the Robert Bosch Foundation . From October 1988 to 2004 he was head of the Medical History Institute in Mainz . In 2004 an academic commemorative publication was dedicated to him.

His research focuses on the edition of Samuel Thomas von Soemmerring's diaries , the importance of the doctor for the relationship between Christians and Jews in the late Middle Ages and early modern times, Alexander von Humboldt and yellow fever and medical historians in the Third Reich.

In 1998, Werner Friedrich Kümmel was elected a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina in the History of Science and Medicine section .
