history

The first settlement took place at the instigation of Luis Piedra Buena in 1859 on Isla Pavón . The island was originally called Islet Reach or Isla del Medio according to the report of the English sailor Pringles Stokes from 1827, who took part in Robert Fitz Roy's expedition. When Capitán Luis Piedra Buena landed here around 1859, nobody remembered these names, which is why he called them Isla Pavón in memory of the battle of Pavón . He took possession of it for Argentina, settled a few families and built himself a house that served as a residence and defensive position at the same time. A reconstruction of this house on the foundations of the original house is now used as a museum. The Isla Pavón remained a stopover or starting point for many expeditions into the interior of Patagonia or the Antarctic .

In the meantime, settlement shifted from Isla Pavón to the current location of the city. On January 11, 1880, the central government ordered the establishment of a shepherd's colony , the Colonia Santa Cruz . The granting of land property by a subsequent government by decree of November 9, 1899 contributed to the expansion of the settlement. The new settlers named the place El Paso or Paso del Río Santa Cruz . These names were gradually replaced by the name Paso Ibáñez , which pays homage to the first settler at the new location. The new name was officially recognized by an official resolution dated May 20, 1920 through the establishment of the Comisión de Fomento Paso Ibáñez . It was not until August 2, 1933, that the town was given the name Comandante Luis Piedra Buena by decree 25.987 of the then national government. In 1968 it was decided that the name of the place should be written in two words ( Piedra Buena instead of Piedrabuena ) according to the spelling of the namesake . Both spellings still exist side by side in practice.

tourism

The Isla Pavon is located between the two bridges of the National Route 3 via the Rio Santa Cruz. Next to it is Isla Los Guindos , which got its name from the sour cherry trees that the founder and namesake of the city, Luis Piedra Buena, planted together with raspberry bushes. The islands and the banks of the river are the preferred destination for the Piedrabuenenses and tourists. The offers in this zone include a campsite, an outdoor swimming pool and a children's playground.

Sport fishing on the banks of the Río Santa Cruz or on Isla Monte León as a salt water variant extends the tourist offer. You can fish for rainbow trout, sea bass (Róbalo), Pejerrey, Mariscos, mussels and the large spider crab (centolla). Sport hunting is also permitted outside the grace periods for guanacos, ostriches, foxes, hares, ducks, bustards and mountain cats.
