Combretum aculeatum is a species of long filament ( Combretum ). It is widespread in the savannahs of Africa.
description
In Combretum aculeatum is a deciduous, often climbing shrub reached, the stature heights of 1 to 4 meters. The bark of young twigs is brown, later gray.
The alternate up almost constantly against arranged on the branches leaves are stalked. The base of the petioles remains as a thorn up to 1 cm long after the leaves have fallen . The simple leaf blade is 3 to 7 cm long and 2 to 3 cm wide and is elliptical to obovate and slightly hairy on both sides.

The flowers are in lateral, short racemose inflorescences . The stalked flowers are five-fold with a double flower envelope . The flower base and calyx are purple in color. The five pink to white, hairy petals are 4 to 6 mm long and 1 to 2 mm wide and fused to form a tube.
The 1.5 to 2.3 cm large, almost hairless wing nuts have five wings.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.

Combretum aculeatum is widespread in the savannahs of Africa ; in more humid savannas, this species is often found on termite mounds .
Taxonomy
The first description of Combretum aculeatum was made in 1808 by Étienne Pierre Ventenat in Choix de Plantes, Dont la Plupart Sont Cultivées dans le Jardin de Cels , plate 58. The specific epithet aculeatum (aculeatus = prickly) refers to the base of the leaf stalks that hardens into thorns.

Combretum aculeatum has numerous uses in traditional medicine in West Africa and is eaten by livestock.
