On July 1, 1998, as part of the secular school reform in Québec, the CSPI was founded. With this reform, the previously denominationally separate school authorities were dissolved and replaced by new ones, which are defined according to linguistic and geographical criteria. The CSPI replaced the Catholic Commission scolaire Jérôme-Le Royer and parts of the Commission des écoles catholiques de Montréal and the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal .

The CSPI operates 41 primary schools, seven secondary schools, five special schools, ten vocational schools, one adult education facility and one distance learning center. 5,500 employees (55% of whom are teachers) look after around 35,000 students. 23 school councils, elected by the residents of the supervised area, oversee the school board, with nine councils having executive functions.
