English Montreal School Board

The English Montreal School Board (EMSB, French Commission scolaire English-Montréal ) is a state school authority in the Canadian province of Québec . She is responsible for the organization of English-language school teaching in the center and north of the administrative region of Montreal .

On July 1, 1998, the EMSB was founded as part of the secular school reform in Québec. With this reform, the previously denominationally separate school authorities were dissolved and replaced by new ones, which are defined according to linguistic and geographical criteria. The EMSB took over the anglophone parts of the Commission des écoles catholiques de Montréal , the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal , the Commission scolaire Sainte-Croix and the Commission scolaire Jérôme-Le Royer .

The EMSB operates 40 primary schools, 17 secondary schools, eleven schools for pupils with learning difficulties, ten institutions for social work and eleven centers for vocational and adult education. Around 38,000 students are looked after. 23 school councils, elected by the residents of the supervised area, oversee the school board, with nine councils having executive functions.
